MAN BOOBS OR "MOOBS"

What Are Man Boobs Or 'Moobs'?

The medical term for 'man boobs' is gynecomastia or enlarged male mammary glands.

An increasing amount of online research is delving into this topic as more men become aware of the issue of enlarged breasts. This condition can impact as many as 60% of men, spanning from infants to adolescents. What is contributing to their growth, and why are more men being affected? Frequently, the cause is labeled as idiopathic or 'unknown', yet upon examining the potential factors, one can find a multitude of possibilities.

Surprisingly, male breast reduction surgery is now the fastest-growing procedure in plastic surgery in England. According to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, 581 men underwent breast reductions in 2009, marking an 80% increase from the year before.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that approximately 18,000 men in the United States underwent the procedure in 2008, making it one of the top five cosmetic surgeries performed on males. Out of this group, 14,203 were aged between thirteen and nineteen, marking a significant 79% increase in adolescent surgeries since 2003.

Causes of Man Boobs

  • Estrogen
  • Androgen antagonists or antiandrogens
  • HIV medications
  • Anti-anxiety drugs
  • Anti-depressants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Cimetidine
  • Chemotherapy
  • Heart medications
  • Alcohol
  • Amphetamines
  • Marijuana

  • Phytoestrogens – particularly those found in soy

The female sex hormone estrogen has mitogenic properties, meaning it stimulates the division and proliferation of cells, including fat cells. While the breast tissue is particularly responsive to estrogen, the hormone isn't solely responsible for changes in size. Anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders can also promote breast tissue enlargement, often resulting in the phenomenon of "moobs." Additionally, the escalating obesity epidemic contributes to this issue. Androgen antagonist medications prescribed for conditions like prostate cancer and BPH can increase breast volume as well. Certain anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, and heart medications also have a similar effect, and their usage is on the rise. Furthermore, antipsychotics raise prolactin levels, the hormone associated with lactation, which can lead to a milky discharge from male breasts, similar to what occurs in females during breastfeeding.

What steps can be taken to address this? Utilizing progesterone is one option! In the early phases of progesterone use, "man boobs" may become more pronounced until progesterone asserts itself as the dominant hormone. In addition to the evident female-related symptoms, males may also encounter estrogen-dominant effects when they first start using progesterone.
